City partners with community for National Night Out Aug. 6

People building a stronger community

National Night Out event on Aug. 6 in Crete City Park.

The City of Crete will join communities across America celebrating National Night Out. This annual event promotes police-community partnerships and brings people together building stronger, safer, and more caring places to live.

National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Crete City Park, along East 12th Street behind City Hall and is being organized by the Crete Police Department.

“We want to encourage a true sense of community,” Lieutenant Gary Young said. “Knowing each other and building bonds of trust and respect is important to everyone who lives in Crete”.

According to Young, this will be the 36th Annual National Night Out. Last year, over 16,000 communities, in all 50 states participated.  This is Crete’s second year and the first event at City Park. Activities will include a bounce house and free hot dogs, which are being provided by local businesses, Crete Volunteer Fire Department trucks and ambulance, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office K9 Indy, the Nebraska State Patrol’s “Persuader,” and games.

The Crete Police Department is also encouraging people to bring a donation for the Blue Valley Community Action Food Pantry-Saline County. The Pantry is in particular need of cereal, canned meat, spaghetti, pasta sauce, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned fruit, granola bars, juice, and bread. Collection barrels will be set up around City Park to accept donations.
