Welcoming Community

Building Welcoming Communities is one part of the first-ever national immigrant integration strategies brought forward by the White House Task Force on Immigrant Integration. Crete Mayor Roger Foster joined representatives from Nebraska Is Home and Nebraska Appleseed at the White House in 2015 to map out the next steps for strengthening immigrant inclusion.

“Crete has been a Welcoming community that dates back to our inception and it’s served our community well for the last century,” Foster said. “Now, we welcome the blending of our Hispanic population to add to what makes the melting pot of Nebraska great.”

Welcoming America is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that is proud to support the many diverse communities and partners who are leading efforts to make their communities more vibrant places for all.

Crete is a Welcoming City, part of Welcoming America, that:

  • Plans: All relevant sectors, such as government, business, non-profit, and others, work together to create a welcoming community climate that supports long-term integration.
  • Commits: Municipalities commit to institutionalize strategies ensuring the ongoing inclusion and long-term economic and social integration of newcomers.
  • Builds Community: Newcomers and long-time residents find common ground and shared leadership.
  • Communicates: Messages of unity and shared values permeate the community through the media, through the voices of leaders, and among residents.
  • Sustains: Policies and practices are considered to ensure interactions between new and long-time residents remain positive ones and the community’s economic vitality remains strong.
