Adult Summer Reading Genre Challenge

Crete Public Library.

Are you stuck in a rut (or a few ruts) when it comes to reading choices? Well…we at Crete Public Library want to help you widen your horizons – or at least challenge you to read books that you normally don’t read.

The adult summer reading challenge is to read 5 books, each from a different genre, through Aug. 31, and those who read 5 books from a selection of nine genres will stand a chance to win an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot.

Don’t know how to pick out a book from an unfamiliar genre? The librarians are happy to help.

(Public access to the Library building is limited to patron computer use by appointment; materials can be reserved online from the library catalog or by phone for the pickup window only until further notice. Learn more about reserving and borrowing materials.)

Young Adult (YA) is not a genre per se, and a wide range of genres can be found within YA. All of the genres except Mainstream may be self-explanatory. Mainstream (or Literary Fiction) is a broad genre that encompasses many other genres. It can be difficult to identify and classify Mainstream novels, but they are known for their various “appeal factors” such as language, character, story, or setting.

The nine genres are:

  • Biography (or Autobiography)
  • Contemporary
  • Romance
  • Historical
  • Mainstream
  • Science Fiction
  • Suspense (Mystery and Thriller)
  • Young Adult
  • Non-Fiction

View/Download the genre challenge form.

The form can be completed online or by hand. Simply fill in the books that have been read; once five books are read, please drop off the form at the library pickup window.
