Ward III Council vacancy advertised

Interested residents should submit letters by May 26

Crete City Hall, 243 East 13th Street, Crete, NE.

Jack Oelschlager, Crete City Council Member in Ward III, submitted his letter of resignation from the Council and his last meeting was May 16. Oelschlager is moving out of Crete, leaving a vacancy for the remainder 1 year and 6 months of his council term.

The Mayor and Council advertise through public notice to fill the council seat. Qualified candidates must be registered voters and residents of Ward III in the City of Crete and should address a letter to the mayor stating their interest and deliver it to the City Clerk’s office at City Hall by 4:30 p.m. on May 26, 2023.

The Mayor may nominate an eligible candidate to serve the remainder of the council term, subject to final approval by the city council.

Letters can be hand-delivered to City Hall, 243 East 13th Street or mail to the City Clerk, City of Crete, P.O. Box 86, Crete, NE, 68333.

Oelschlager was first elected to the council in 2000 and won reelection in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. His current council term ends in 2024. He retired in 2023 after a 45-year career at Nestle Purina in Crete.

The process of succession and filling vacancies created during a term in the offices of elected officials is provided for by state statute and city ordinance (Chapter 1, Article 2).
