City Spring Cleanup May 5-10
The City of Crete will hold the annual Spring Cleanup May 5-10, with special Transfer Station services, major appliance pick-up, downtown cleanup day, and a community shred event.
Groups and gatherings are not part of these activities. Residents are strongly encouraged to practice proper social distancing when participating in any community spring cleanup activities: six-foot distance between themselves and other individuals and continue hand-washing, good hygiene, and disinfection procedures.
Transfer Station Specials: No fees will be charged at the Transfer Station for major appliances delivered on Tuesday, May 5 or Saturday, May 9; yard waste or brush and metal or iron items can be dropped off for free. All appliances with freon must have it removed and tagged prior to disposal.
Fees are charged for certain garbage items and a coupon is available from the local newspaper advertisement or downloadable pdf (below) for Crete residents only to receive $5 off a load of refuse taken to the Transfer Station. Under current social distancing guidelines, no payments will be accepted at the Transfer Station; attendants will instead collect contact information from residents and the city will issue a bill for disposal of garbage items. Bills can be paid by mail or through the City Hall Utilities Office drive-thru.
Transfer station regular hours are Tuesdays, from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The station is located 1/2 mile north of Highway 33 and Boswell Avenue on the east side of the road (478 County Road 2300).
Curbside Pick-Up of Major Appliances: This service is offered by the City Public Works Department to Crete residents who call ahead to arrange a pick-up before Thursday, May 7 at 5 p.m. Pick-ups will be made Wednesday-Friday, May 6, 7, and 8. Call the Public Works office at 402-826-4312.
Appliances with freon must have it removed and tagged; no electronics. Pick-ups will not be done for calls made after the deadline.
Community Shred Event: Pinnacle Bank, at 143 East 13th Street, will host a community shred event on May 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. when residents can bring old and unwanted documents to be shred for free. Please no three-ring binders; maximum of 10 boxes per person.
Pinnacle Bank will also collect supplies, and canned and nonperishable food donations for Blue Valley Community Action - Saline County Food Pantry. BVCA suggests the following items: peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pancake mix and syrup, canned fruit and meat, juice, pasta and pasta sauce, granola bars, rice, laundry soap, dish soap, toilet paper, and deodorant.
Downtown Cleanup Day: Members of the Crete Volunteer Fire Department will wash down Main Ave. on Sunday, May 10 at approximately 7 a.m. kicking off a downtown cleanup day. Vehicles along Main, from 9th to 14th streets, will need to be moved by 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. Crete Police officers will assist with traffic control support. Downtown property and business owners are encouraged to continue cleanup activities by sweeping sidewalks in front of their stores and properties and cleaning front windows.
