Crete Community World Cup set for April 9-10

Crete Community World Cup soccer tournament, April 9-10, 2022.

Crete will host the second Community World Cup soccer tournament on April 9 and 10 after the event took a two-year hiatus due to COVID.

The first version of Crete's own “World Cup” event was held in May 2019 with 13 teams in male and female divisions. The event encourages business sponsorships and community teams for the tournament to be held at the Armory Park soccer fields on East 1st Street. The championship games will be played on Doane University’s Papik Field.

All proceeds from the Crete Community World Cup tournament will go to the Doane Equity Program, a fund to assist families in covering the cost of certain local youth programs.

Players must be at least 16 years old for both male and female divisions. Teams can have between 7 and 10 players for the 7 vs. 7 tournament format. Team registration runs until March 21 at 5 p.m. Business sponsorships for team registrations are $300 to cover the tournament fee and ten team t-shirts. Businesses will have their name and logo on the team’s shirts. In addition, businesses will have the option to select the country they want their team to represent in this World Cup tournament.

Registrations and any questions can be directed to City of Crete's Community Assistance Director Nancy Tellez, email nancy.tellez@crete.ne.gov or call 402.826.6405.

Event planning includes the Community Assistance Office and Crete Parks and Recreation, and Doane University.

The committee encourages participation in this World Cup event because it can benefit the community in two big ways: 1) sports have a way of creating unity between individuals that are otherwise not unified; 2) it is crucial for young kids to be active and participate in sports with their peers and the equity program can help them overcome barriers to participate.

More on the Doane Equity Program: This program covers youth sports and activities fees for new participants or current participants re-enrolling or enrolling in a different activity. Funds are intended to assist households that qualify for free and reduced price school meals when paying for youth activities becomes a hardship or barrier for participation. Activities covered by this program include all City of Crete Parks & Recreation activities, Cub Scouts Pack 212, and Boy Scouts Troop 212.
